Characteristics of the Science Fiction Genre:

  • Involve technology or scientific principles that contradict known facts of history.

  • Set in outer space, on other worlds, or involving aliens.

  • Involve technology that contradicts known laws of nature.

  • Discovery or application of new scientific principles or technology.

  • Setting in the future, alternate time lines, or in a historical past.

  • Apocalyptic--the end of civilization through nuclear war, plague, or other general disaster.

  • The struggle against totalitarian governments.

  • May involve genetic manipulation, time travel, and/or space colonization.
